Our Mission
Community Scholar’s mission is to meaningfully and expeditiously raise the grades of all students.
Our method is deeply rooted in community engagement. We build a community around each student to bring them academic success. In short, we provide the structure for parents, tutors, teachers and school administrations to coordinate their support of each student. From the student’s perspective, she will feel like she is part of a community that cares about her success, which in turn gives her the motivation to go further.
School in focus
The Midtown Academy
Community Scholar has partnered with The Midtown Academy in Baltimore City to strengthen student achievement. For the 2026–2027 school year, Community Scholar and Midtown Academy aim to deliver high‑impact tutoring to at least 50% of students in grades 2–5. Our outcome goal is for at least 80% of participating students to finish the year scoring at MCAP Level 4 or 5 and at On Grade Level on i‑Ready.
FOSTERING A CULTURE OF LEARNING
We offer small‑group tutoring in math and English Language Arts (ELA) for students in grades 2–5. Tutoring occurs mostly onsite but can happen using remote software as well.
Our program is designed to help students earn strong scores on key assessments, including iReady, MCAP, and PARCC. Students working at grade level join groups of up to five, while students who are below grade level receive more intensive support in groups of no more than two.
Parents are strongly encouraged to sit in on tutoring sessions and are regularly engaged by tutors outside of session times to help keep students’ progress moving forward at home. Most volunteer tutors come from the surrounding community or are parents within the school, ensuring that students learn from adults who are invested in their success.
“
“I just wanted to thank you for all the work you are doing with my third graders. All of them have made some kind of improvement on their middle of the year assessment. Between the work we're doing in the classroom and the work you're doing with them, our third years will finish out the year strong.”

“Tatiana was able to not only move to the advanced math group, but acted as a peer helper in the advanced group. She already came in knowing rounding and was helping others.”
