Our Mission

Community Scholar’s mission is to meaningfully and expeditiously raise the grades of all students.

Our method is deeply rooted in community engagement. We build a community around each student to bring them academic success. In short, we provide the structure for parents, tutors, teachers and school administrations to coordinate their support of each student. From the student’s perspective, she will feel like she is part of a community that cares about her success, which in turn gives her the motivation to go further.

The Midtown Academy

Community Scholar has partnered with The Midtown Academy in Baltimore City to strengthen student achievement. For the 2026–2027 school year, Community Scholar and Midtown Academy aim to deliver high‑impact tutoring to at least 50% of students in grades 2–5. Our outcome goal is for at least 80% of participating students to finish the year scoring at MCAP Level 4 or 5 and at On Grade Level on i‑Ready.

Our Programs

TUTORING

We currently provide tutoring in mathematics and English, Language Arts (ELA) for grades 2 through 5. The goal of the tutoring program is to help students achieve excellent scores in their periodic assessments, iReady, MCAP, and PARCC. Students are placed into groups of 4 if they are performing at grade level and maximum groups of 2 if they are below grade level. Parents are highly encouraged to participate in tutoring sessions. Parents are also actively engaged by tutors outside of the tutoring session to keep the momentum going.

Volunteer tutors are generally members of the community or parents within the school.

MENTORING AND CLUBS

We provide logistical and other support for mentoring and after school clubs.

REFERRALS

There are numerous programs available for students and families. Too often families in need of additional services don’t find them easily. We will provide referrals to other non-profits or government agencies for needs outside our scope or capabilities.

“I just wanted to thank you for all the work you are doing with my third graders. All of them have made some kind of improvement on their middle of the year assessment. Between the work we're doing in the classroom and the work you're doing with them, our third years will finish out the year strong.”

“Tatiana was able to not only move to the advanced math group, but acted as a peer helper in the advanced group. She already came in knowing rounding and was helping others.”
